What Is LASIK?

LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a procedure that reshapes the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, so that light focuses more precisely on the retina. When the cornea is slightly too steep, too flat, or irregularly shaped, the result is blurred vision that we correct with glasses or contacts. LASIK addresses the underlying shape itself.

By gently reshaping the cornea with a laser, LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. For most patients, the goal is a reduction in, or freedom from, their dependence on corrective lenses.

At Quantum Eye Surgery Center, our surgeons use that same goal as the starting point for a treatment plan tailored to your eyes.

What Happens During LASIK?

LASIK is a quick, outpatient procedure, and most patients are surprised by how comfortable and straightforward it is. The entire process usually takes only a few minutes per eye, and you are awake and relaxed throughout.

Here is what the procedure generally involves at our center:

  1. Numbing eye drops are applied so the eye is comfortable. No needles are involved, and a mild sedative can be offered to help you relax.
  2. Using the femtosecond laser, your surgeon creates a thin, protective flap in the surface of the cornea. This step is entirely bladeless.
  3. The flap is gently lifted to expose the tissue underneath.
  4. The excimer laser reshapes the cornea according to your customized treatment plan. Advanced eye tracking keeps the treatment precisely aligned, even with the small natural movements of the eye.
  5. The flap is repositioned into place, where it adheres on its own without the need for stitches.

Once both eyes are treated, you rest for a short time before heading home with someone who can drive you.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is an excellent option for many people, but it is not the right fit for everyone, and the only way to know for certain is a thorough evaluation.

In general, good candidates are adults whose vision prescription has been stable for a period of time and whose eyes are healthy and free of certain conditions.

A few factors that help determine candidacy include the thickness and shape of your cornea, the stability of your prescription, and the overall health of the surface of your eye. During your evaluation at Quantum Eye Surgery Center, we use advanced corneal imaging to measure and map your eyes in detail, which tells us whether LASIK is likely to give you a great result.

If LASIK is not the ideal choice for your eyes, that does not mean vision correction is off the table. Because we offer a full range of options, including PRK and the EVO ICL, our surgeons can guide you toward the approach that genuinely fits your eyes rather than trying to fit your eyes to a single procedure.

What Is LASIK Recovery Like?

One of the most appealing aspects of LASIK is how quickly people bounce back. Many patients notice clearer vision within hours, and a large number are back to work within a day or two. Your vision will continue to sharpen and settle over the following days and weeks.

In the first few days, it is normal to experience some dryness, light sensitivity, or the sensation that something is in your eye, along with halos or glare around lights at night. You will use prescription and lubricating eye drops during this window, and your care team will ask you to avoid rubbing your eyes, keep water out of them for a short period, and wear a protective shield while sleeping at first.

PRK: An Alternative to LASIK

LASIK is a wonderful option for the right candidate, but it is not the only way to reduce your dependence on glasses and contacts. When LASIK is not the ideal fit, the most common alternative is PRK.

PRK, which stands for photorefractive keratectomy, is a laser vision correction procedure that came before LASIK and remains an excellent choice today. Like LASIK, it reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and at our center it is performed using the same Alcon WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser. The key difference lies in how the surgeon reaches the tissue being reshaped. Rather than creating a corneal flap, PRK involves gently removing the thin outer surface layer of the cornea, reshaping the surface underneath with the laser, and allowing that outer layer to grow back naturally over the following days.

Because PRK does not involve a flap, it can be a better choice for patients with thinner corneas, as well as for people whose work or hobbies put them at higher risk of an eye injury. The final visual results are comparable to those of LASIK.

For some patients, a lens-based procedure like the EVO ICL is a better path than either LASIK or PRK, particularly for higher prescriptions. Because we offer the full range of options, the purpose of your evaluation is not to sell you on one procedure, but to determine which one truly fits your eyes.
