What Is the EVO ICL?

The EVO ICL, which stands for Implantable Collamer Lens, is a small lens that is placed inside the eye to correct vision. Unlike glasses or contacts that sit on or in front of the eye, the ICL works from within, positioned just behind the iris and in front of the natural lens, where it stays permanently unless a change is needed.

The lens is made from Collamer, a proprietary material that is biocompatible, meaning the eye recognizes it as a natural part of its environment. It does not cause inflammation or irritation, and most patients are completely unaware of its presence after the procedure.

The EVO ICL corrects nearsightedness, and the EVO+ ICL extends that correction to include astigmatism as well. Your surgeon will determine which version is appropriate based on your prescription and the shape of your cornea.

How Does EVO ICL Work?

The procedure itself is straightforward and takes about 20 to 30 minutes per eye. You will be awake throughout, but most patients find the experience far more comfortable than they expected.

Numbing eye drops and a mild sedative are applied to keep you relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.
Your surgeon makes a very small opening at the edge of the cornea, no larger than necessary to guide the lens into place.
The lens is gently folded and carefully placed into position behind the iris, in front of the eye’s natural lens.
The procedure is complete. No tissue is removed, and the small opening seals on its own without stitches.
Most patients notice a meaningful improvement in vision within the first 24 hours, with full results typically stabilizing within days to a few weeks, depending on the individual

Am I a Candidate for EVO ICL?

The EVO ICL is designed for adults who are typically between the ages of 21 and 45, with moderate to high levels of nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. Candidacy is ultimately determined by your surgeon based on your individual eye health.

The EVO ICL can be an excellent option for patients who have been told they are not candidates for laser vision correction due to high prescriptions or thinner corneas, as well as for patients who simply prefer a procedure that does not involve reshaping the cornea at all.

Candidacy is determined through a thorough pre-operative evaluation that measures your prescription, the size of your eye, and the health of your cornea and lens. Your surgeon will review all of this with you before any decisions are made.

Because the corneal nerves are not disrupted during the procedure, the EVO ICL is significantly less likely to cause the dry eye symptoms that some patients experience after laser vision correction. For patients who already have dry eyes, this is a particular advantage.

Built-in UV Protection

The Collamer material used in the EVO ICL filters ultraviolet light, providing a layer of UV protection inside the eye with every waking hour.

What Is Recovery Like After EVO ICL Surgery?

Recovery after EVO ICL is generally quick. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a day or two, and many notice dramatically improved vision almost immediately after the procedure. You will use prescription eye drops for a short period following surgery, and your care team will schedule follow-up visits to confirm the eye is healing as expected and provide you with a list of instructions to follow during early recovery.

What Is the Difference Between EVO and EVO+?

The core technology in both lenses is identical. The difference is in what each one corrects.

The EVO ICL addresses nearsightedness. The EVO+ ICL corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism in the same procedure. If astigmatism is part of your prescription, the EVO+ is designed to handle both at once, reducing or eliminating the need for additional correction.
