Corneal Transplant
A corneal transplant replaces diseased or damaged corneal tissue with healthy tissue from a donor.
Modern transplant surgery has moved well beyond the all-or-nothing method of the past, and in many cases only the affected layer of the cornea needs to be replaced rather than the entire cornea. Our surgeons perform three types of transplant, and the right one depends on which layers of your cornea are involved.
DMEK, or Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty, replaces only the innermost layer of the cornea. This is the thinnest and most selective type of transplant, and it is often used for patients whose vision problems come from a failing inner cell layer, such as those with Fuchs’ dystrophy. Because so little tissue is exchanged, many patients experience a faster visual recovery.
DSAEK, or Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty, also replaces the inner layer of the cornea but uses a slightly thicker graft that includes a small amount of supporting tissue. This can make it a more suitable choice for certain eyes, and your surgeon will explain why one approach fits your situation better than the other.
Penetrating Keratoplasty, sometimes called a full-thickness transplant, replaces all layers of the cornea. It is typically reserved for eyes with significant scarring, thinning, or damage that extends through the entire cornea, and it remains an essential option for the most advanced cases.
Superficial Keratectomy
A superficial keratectomy gently removes the outermost surface layer of the cornea. It is used to clear away scar tissue, surface irregularities, or certain lesions that sit on the front of the cornea. By smoothing and cleaning the surface, the procedure can improve both comfort and clarity, and it is often chosen for conditions affecting only the top layer of tissue. Because it works at the surface, recovery tends to be more straightforward than deeper corneal surgery.
Pterygium Excision
A pterygium is a fleshy, wing-shaped growth of tissue that begins on the white of the eye and can slowly extend onto the cornea. It is frequently linked to long-term sun and wind exposure. A small pterygium may cause only redness and irritation, but a larger one can pull on the cornea, blur vision, and become cosmetically bothersome.
Pterygium excision removes the abnormal tissue from the surface of the eye. To reduce the chance of the growth returning, our surgeons often combine the removal with a graft that covers the area where the tissue was taken, helping the surface heal smoothly.

Amniotic Membrane Transplantation
Amniotic membrane transplantation uses a thin, specially prepared layer of donated amniotic tissue to support healing on the surface of the eye. This membrane is rich in properties that calm inflammation and encourage the eye’s own tissue to repair itself, and it is naturally absorbed or removed as healing progresses.
It can be a valuable tool in a variety of situations, including surface wounds that are slow to heal, damage from chemical or thermal injury, and reconstruction after removing a growth like a pterygium. For many patients, it acts as a biological bandage that gives the eye a healthier environment in which to recover.
Corneal Reconstruction and Repair
Some corneal problems involve structural damage that goes beyond a single procedure. Injuries, lacerations, perforations, and complex surface disease can all threaten the integrity of the eye and require careful, individualized repair. Corneal reconstruction and repair brings together the techniques above, along with meticulous surgical repair of the tissue itself, to restore the cornea’s structure and protect the eye. Because these cases are often complex and no two are quite alike, they benefit enormously from a surgical team with deep, focused experience in corneal care, which is exactly what our center is built to provide.
