What Are Cataracts?

Inside your eye sits a natural lens that focuses light onto the retina, allowing you to see clearly. When that lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. Light can no longer pass through cleanly, and it begins to impact your vision in many ways: colors look dull, nighttime driving becomes difficult, and even bright sunlight can cause uncomfortable glare.

Cataracts are one of the most common age-related changes in the eye. Most people begin developing them after age 55, though they can occur earlier due to injury, certain medications, or underlying health conditions like diabetes.

Cataracts are entirely treatable, and surgery to address them is one of the safest and most effective procedures in all of medicine.

How Do I Know When It’s Time for Cataract Surgery?

The decision about when to have cataract surgery is personal and largely depends on how much your vision affects your daily life. That said, there are some clear signs that it may be time to have a conversation with your surgeon.

What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

Before the Procedure

You will see your surgeon for a comprehensive pre-operative evaluation. This involves detailed measurements of your eye that are used to select the correct lens power for your IOL. You will receive instructions about any eye drops to start using beforehand, and your surgical team will walk you through exactly what to expect on the day of your procedure.

The Day of Surgery

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you go home the same day. The procedure itself typically takes less than 20 minutes. You will be given eye drops to numb the eye, and most patients also receive a mild sedative to help them relax. You will be awake but comfortable throughout.

Your surgeon makes a very small opening at the edge of the cornea, then uses either ultrasound energy or the femtosecond laser to break up and gently remove the cloudy lens. Once the natural lens has been removed, the IOL is carefully inserted and positioned.

Typically, no stitches are required as the small incision seals on its own.

Right After Surgery

After a short recovery period at our center, you will be ready to go home with a friend or family member who will drive you. You cannot drive yourself after surgery because of the anesthesia you receive. Your eye may feel slightly scratchy or sensitive for a few hours, which is completely normal. Your vision may also appear blurry at first as your eye begins to adjust to the new lens.

What Is Recovery Like After Cataract Surgery?

Most patients are genuinely surprised by how quick and manageable recovery is. Many notice improved vision within the first day or two, though it can take a few weeks for your vision to fully stabilize.

You will be prescribed an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to use in the weeks following surgery. Protecting the eye from water, dust, and rubbing is important during this window. Your surgeon will ask you to avoid strenuous activity for a short period, but the majority of patients return to light daily activities within a day or two.

You will have follow-up visits at scheduled intervals so your care team can confirm the eye is healing as expected and address any questions along the way.
